Long gone are the days of huge silver fillings...unfortunately not!
Amalgam fillings are still regularly used by dentists and although they are strong and can last for a long time many people are horrified by the sight of them.
Is it Dangerous?
Dental amalgam contains mercury which is released when the filling is removed therefore it is not ideal to have new amalgam fillings placed if you want to have them change din the future. It is much better to invest the white composite filings from the beginning. So far there has not been any scientific evidence to confirm that silver fillings or removal of silver fillings is bad for you.
How long Does it Take?
Depending on how many silver fillings you have this will vary however the process is normally very straightforward and can normally be done in one dental visit.
Will it hurt?
The process of changing fillings is the same as when you originally had the filling except this time there will probably be less or no decay that needs to be removed. Your mouth will need to be numbed and then the old silver fillings can be cleaned out and a new tooth-coloured filling can be placed.
If you would like to find out about changing your silver fillings why don't you book a free consultation with Dr Alex Al-Shaikh.
